Opera New Jersey opens with 'Barber of Seville' in Princeton
Opera New Jersey begins its enliven in earnest tomorrow night with the opening performance of Gioachino Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville.”Paired with the Rossini waggish opera is the much darker “The Consul” by Gian Carlo Menotti, best known for his Christmastime favorite, “Amahl and the Tenebrousness Visitors.” “The Consul” opens next Saturday.
Mark Laycock, who served as manager of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra for 22 years, returns to conduct the New Jersey Symphony Reception room Orchestra to accompany the performance. Michael Scarola serves as stage director.
Singing the over-friendly lead role of Count Almaviva is Korean-American tenor Hak Soo Kim, who previously sang the r while doing a residence with the Domingo-Thornton Young Artist program of the LA Opera. He has also performed with Opera Southwest in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and with the Sarasota Opera in Florida.
Other formation members include Heather Johnson as Rosina, Marco Nisticò as Figaro, Stefano de Peppo as Dr. Bartolo and Boyish Bok Kim as Don Basilio.
