That might be the warning posted on the door of the Greater Reston Arts Center. The works of 18 artists in GRACE’s popular exhibition, “Bite, Identity and Humor,” were selected, according to curator Jefferson Pinder, exactingly because of their serious ferocity, their sharp-witted bite.
“This eclectic mix represents a powerful collection of art that displays a awful voice of expression,” explained Pinder, a Washington-based video artist. “I sought individuals who bargain with honesty and angst in both beautiful and clever ways.”
Unlike purely abstract art that concentrates on appearance, color and line, intentionally independent from visual realities, the complex works in GRACE’s current show — video, bringing off art, painting, photography and sculpture — grapple with all kinds of personal and social issues, shaped by each of the artists’ sole experiences and preoccupations.
Overlaying the works’ darker sensibilities, like angst, anger and bete noire, is the vital component of humor.
