Post details: Netanyahu's 'catastrophic success' :: The Corner Report

"The perception of a two-country d in Palestine is finished. Israeli settlements in the West Bank and their escort infrastructure have made a workable and individual Palestinian state unthinkable. The settlements, moreover, cannot be unsnapped. Their actuality obviates the scarcity for formal Israeli annexation: The de-facto annexation of the West Bank has already bewitched site. The only uneaten settlement is a unique, unified, bi-chauvinistic confirm."

By Robert Grenier

The George W. Bush administering had a adjectival phrase for it: "Catastrophic good." As part of the planning handle before the US attack of Iraq in 2003, a broad muster of potentially destructive unintended consequences of a flourishing military action was fatigued up. Though initially there was estimable support when none of the developments on the record came to obsolescent, it in the final analysis became conspicuous that the catalogue raisonn - which failed to prepare for a keep on tenterhooks of sublimely unwise pylon-transgression decisions - was far too diminutive.

George Ball, Behind the Scenes in U.S. Foreign Policy

    About this book
Diplomat and "in the know about become informed man" George Ball wielded enormous influence in American foreign policy for more than forty years. Best known for his dissent from U.S. Vietnam action when he was under secretary of state during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, he also helped those administrations formulate policy in the European Community, the Congo, the Cuban missile crisis, and Cyprus. His last formal appointment was in 1968 as U.S. Papal nuncio to the United Nations, but he continued to advise and unofficially assist presidents and members of the American national elite for another twenty-five years, often taking contrary and critical positions on the major issues of the day. In this book James Bill offers fascinating new insights into the inner workings of remote policy by examining Ball's career and the political problems with which he grappled. Drawing on Ball's personal archive as well as capacious interviews with Ball and with dozens of his associates, Bill traces Ball's involvement...

    About this book
During his tenantry as undersecretary of state from 1961 to 1966, George Ball was the only presidential adviser who systematically opposed American military intervention in Southeast Asia. In George Ball, Vietnam, and the Rethinking of ContainmentDavid DiLeo profiles Ball's adversity to the United States' role in Vietnam and evaluates the impact of this dissent on the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations. At the culmination of the Cold War, Ball questioned the validity of the domino theory and was virtually alone in challenging the idea that containment was an attainable or even excellent goal of American foreign policy. He asserted that the nation's foreign policy must respect non-spiritual as well as moral limitations, and he was skeptical of the use of military power as a political instrument. American intervention in Vietnam, he believed, was the incontestable and tragic consequence of the uncritical globalism that had marked the thinking of policymakers since World War II. DiLeo analyzes...
