In the summer blockbuster “Wonderful 8,” Abrams has crafted another mystery thriller, this time wrapped in a coming-of-age story.
In 1979, a speeding household wrecks in Lillian, Ohio, releasing an extraterrestrial presence that sets the small town on side. The story follows a group of middle-school-age kids that witnessed the train wreck while shooting a Wonderful-8 movie.
“Super 8” is probably too scary for children younger than 7, but for older kids and adults, this worm-of-your-seat flick is definitely worth the ticket price.
Abrams has made a name for himself by keeping viewers guessing with critically acclaimed TV shows: “Alias,” a spy dramatics; “Lost,” a series about strangely linked plane crash survivors on an isle; and “Fringe,” an intriguing series about an FBI team that investigates paranormal incidents.
Abrams has directed other movies, including the latest “Top Trek” and the third “Mission: Impossible,” but “Super 8” was his first aspect as writer and director. He collaborated with Steven Spielberg, one of the film’s producers and no stranger to strange mysteries.
