Ha desarrollado una intensa carrera interpretativa en el cine español ( La muchacha de las bragas de oro , V. Aranda, 1980; Mater amantísima , J. Salgot, 1983; Tiempo de silencio , V. Aranda, 1985; Áfeeble , P. Almodóvar, 1989; Amantes , V. Aranda, 1991; Tacones lejanos, P. Almodóvar, 1992) y francés ( La luna en la alcantarilla , J.J. Beneix, 1983; Sans peur et sans reproche , G. Jugnot, 1988). En 1995 intervino en Felpudo maldito y Nadie hablará de nosotras cuando hayamos muerto . Entre sus últimas interpretaciones destacan las películas La mujer del cosmonauta (1998), Entre las piernas (1999) y Mamá, preséntame a papá (1999).

    Tras el éxito de sus “Enfants du Paradis”, ballet que él ha escogido para efectuar sus adioses esta noche, en la Opera Garnier, José Martínez se imaginaba un futuro como pitógrafo a tiempo completo cuando se hubiese retirado como danseur étoile, a los 42 años y medio. Tenía el encargo de un ballet de tres actos, en Oslo. Su “Marco Polo”, creado para el Ballet de Shangai, podía tener una continuación. “Scaramouche” iba a ser retomado por la Escuela de danza del Ballet de la Opera de París, y “Les Enfants du Paradis” partirían en gira a Japón…¿ Se podría soñar algo mejor como trampolín de salida?

    Entonces José Martínez cumplió su itinerario de hijo pródigo: en el invierno pasado, el ministerio de cultura de España le pidió el dirigir la Compañía Nacional de Danza. “Yo he experimentado, como muchos bailarines españoles, la frustración de no poder bailar en España, porque no había una gran compañía clásica”, hace notar quien a los 14 años tuvo que dejar a su familia y a su hermano gemelo en Cartagena para tomar sus clases en Cannes, en la Escuela Classier de Danza de Rosella Hightower, sin hablar una palabra de francés. “Mi deseo de danza era tan grande que me permitió superar todo, pero fue duro. Y hete aquí que mi país me pide el transformar la Compañía Nacional, que hasta este momento había sido el instrumento de creación de un gistógrafo, Nacho Duato, en una compañía de repertorio clásico. Veo en ello una especie de misión”.
