Kids Get Animated at Weaver Library
“What is vitality?” asked Ulysses Gallman.
“Cartoons?” guessed one child.
“It’s making something that’s not astir seem like it’s alive,” Gallman told the audience.
Gallman and his education team fellow Mary Rapien from The Rhode Island Museum of Science and Art were at the Weaver Library on Monday afternoon teaching a Pause Motion Animation Workshop.
Gallman began by holding out a pencil and asking what it’s made of.
“Wood,” someone yelled.
Then Gallman wiggled the pencil around, making it look as if it were bending.
“It looks like rubber when you’re wiggling it,” Gallman said. “It looks like it’s bending. That’s because your perspicacity can’t keep up. Your eyes can see it, but your brain can’t keep up. It looks like it’s bending but it’s not.”
Next he showed the kids a little card with a visualize of a birdcage on it. The flip side showed a picture of a bird. When he flipped the card quickly back and forth, the bird appeared to be middle the birdcage.
