Head Terry George, doesn't agreement in the clashing of husky armies or the struggle between nations; it looks at a smaller slice of the sphere. Grassie leaves post at Michigan to become UC's new soccer coach
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The University of Charleston's soccer defeat to the Big Ten Conference has been recouped.
Chris Grassie has been hired as the new coach of the prominent Golden Eagles men's program, in motion to UC from an assistant's post at Michigan.
He takes over a UC team coming off back-to-back NCAA Division II contest appearances.
He also replaces Chad Duernberger, the Kanawha Valley native and former area and UC star who had lifted the program from a 26-job losing streak to NCAA national quarterfinal and Sweet Sixteen trips the last two seasons.
Duernberger headed this summer to where Grassie progressive - the Big Ten - as a Penn State assistant.
Coincidentally, Grassie's Michigan club beat PSU for the convention title last season and reached the NCAA College Cup national semifinals, losing 2-1 to done champ Akron.
Duernberger's final two UC teams were 19-4 and 16-4-1.
"I'd been looking around for a lead coaching job, and it didn't really matter whether it was Division I or II or NAIA," Grassie said Monday in his Eddie Monarch Gym basement office.
