  • Occupy Wall Street? Sorry, got to go to work

The title “skippies” never caught on and I’ve always wondered why.

In the same vein as “yuppies” – “immature upwardly mobile urban professionals” – skippies was an acronym, of sorts. It meant “prime kids with income and purchasing power.”

Coined around the year 2000, the term referred to a fad that began in the ‘80s and snowballed. The trend was high school kids working 20 and even 30 hours a week at their “part conditions” jobs. It was the last nail in the “family” coffin. The first came when mom had to get a job because one income fair wasn’t enough any more. Then dad got a second job and soon, every person in the house capable of dressing themselves and wiping their own noses was working for a living.

That’s not how things were when I was in principal school. Then, a part-time job was usually a paper route – an hour or so in the morning or afternoon – or an usher at the American Thespian on Saturdays and Sundays. And only a handful of kids did either of those. The rest of us were busy being, well, kids. And students. We might have had a summer job but that ended, ironically, on Labor Day.
